To Get A Different Result You Sometimes Need A Different Approach

I'm Chris Usher. I'm a former Headteacher and I've been teaching Maths for over 30 years.  I'm also an examiner for the country's largest examination board.

Maths is a fascinating subject. And good grades in Maths can open so many doors, whether it be medicine, dentistry,aerospce engineeing, economics and finance. The list is endless!

But the top universities all want top A/A* grades, and with only around 3% of students each year reaching Grade 9 at GCSE, that's quite a challenge.

In most school classrooms the focus of the teacher is to ensure that your child knows everything they need in time for the exam. But only around 40% of the marks in the exams are to assess students knowledge and basic prcoedural skills. The other 60% is on reasoning and problem-solving.

And we all know that the only way to become better at problem solving is to practice solving problems. Over time, your child can become more confident at recognising what problems are asking and how to break these problems down into manageable steps. But in the classroom at school, the focus too often is on what your child knows - not what they can do with that knowledge!

That's why I'm offering your child the chance to try a different approach.

In the GCSE Grade 9 Accelerator Programme I'll give your child the opportunity to:

✅ Work in an challenging but fun environment, working with other enthusiastic and ambitious students to become better problem solvers in Maths
✅Learn the skills required to analyse problems, recognise what they're being asked to do, and break this down into logical steps
✅Begin to think like an examiner, so that they understand why exam questions are written as they are, and they can begin to anticipate what they'll face in their final exams and be super-prepared for it!


 

How It Will Work

➡️ Two live online group lessons every Tuesday and Wednesday from 6.00-7.00pm

➡️A weekly homework of practice exam problems to reinforce what we've learned

➡️Feedback on homework so your child knows exactly how to improve

➡️A weekly drop-in session where your child can come along and ask for help

➡️Access to a wide range of online resources including hundreds of past exam paper questions and video walkthroughs for your child to use in their own time

➡️Their own personal mentor, a former student, who has walked the same path your child is walking right now, and made it to a top university to follow their dreams! Their mentor will meet with them every fortnight, one-to-one, to make sure they stay on-track, give them encouragement and advice and help them with any problems.

➡️Regular talks from my former students on what it's like studying everything from medicine and dentistry, to aerospace engineering, to business, economics and finance - to help your child stay motivated about their future possibilities!

What Does It Cost?

The programme will run until Wednesday June 11th (the day of the final GCSE Maths paper).

The cost of the programme is between £180 per month, (or £160 per month when paid four-monthly).

This includes the two one-hour online group lessons and a one-hour drop-in session for help with individual problems each week, a weekly homework (marked with feedback on how to improve), 7-day support through WhatsApp, access to our online learning platform of resources to support independent study, a fortnightly 30 minute one-to-one session with their personal mentor and access to regular subject based talks from many of my former students.

But remember, if your child can reach a grade 8 or 9 in GCSE Maths, then so many opportunities are opened to your child - so perhaps the real question is "what is the cost of not trying a different approach to the one-size-fits-all approach of school?". That's for you to decide!
